Martins' hat trick leads payback slaughter of DC
March 19, 2006 (Official Game Summary)
The Red Bulls Reserves defeated the D.C. United Reserves 3-0 on Sunday behind a Thiago Martins hat trick at Bishop England High School in Daniel Island, South Carolina. Midfielder Chris Henderson assisted on two of the goals and goalkeeper Jon Conway earned the shutout for the Red Bulls.
"It was a very good performance from the group and the squad worked hard," said Red Bulls head coach Mo Johnston. "I am obviously very pleased with Thiago and very happy for him as well. He has struggled with injuries over the last 13-14 months and his fitness is finally coming back. All three goals were brilliant."
Henderson set up Martins in the 18th minute by sending a through ball up to Martins, who corralled it at the 18. Martins caught D.C. United 'keeper Ryan McIntosh out of position and delicately chipped the ball over him and into the net for the first goal of the match.
Martins added his second in the 26th minute when Mike Magee dribbled down the left side and slid a cross through the box. Martins beat D.C. defender Stephen deRoux to the ball and one-timed it past McIntosh.
Martins' third goal came in spectacular fashion on a diving header six yards. The build-up commenced with a long ball played by Jordan Cila from midfield to a streaking Henderson on the left flank. Henderson took two touches and sent a perfect cross into the box, which connected with an outstretched Martins to seal the victory.
