Jean-Philippe Peguero scored two goals, and Edson Buddle and Amado Guevara got one each as Metro beat Bayern Munich 4:2. Claudio Pizarro had both Bayern tallies. All of the New York goals came in the second half; Guevara's came from the penalty spot, as he was one of the few Reds to play the full 90 minutes.
Associated Press report:
Jean-Philippe Peguero scored twice in the second half and the New York Red Bulls rallied for a 4-2 victory over a roster-depleted Bayern Munich in an exhibition match Saturday.
Peguero scored in the 52nd and 80th minutes. On his final goal, he chipped a low pass from Joe Vide over the head of Bayern defender Georg Niedermeier and past goalkeeper Bernd Dreher.
Amado Guevara, playing for the first time after missing two games because of a suspension and personal matters, set up one goal and converted a 73rd-minute penalty kick. Guevara sent a low pass in the penalty area to Edson Buddle, who easily beat Dreher in the 64th to even the score at two. Guevara also created the penalty with a shot that was handled by defender Bixente Lizarazu.
Bayern, two-time defending German champion, was missing 10 players because of the World Cup, but still featured a lineup with two of its three leading scorers this past season, Roy Makaay and Claudio Pizarro.
The team twice led on goals by Pizarro, including a 30-yard free kick in the 57th minute that Red Bulls goalkeeper Jon Conway pushed off the left post but still deflected into the net.
Under its former name, the MetroStars, New York beat Bayern 2-0 in 2001, three days after the German club won the European Champions Cup.
