Peguero is on the market
June 20, 2006
Say it ain't so, J-P. According to Shep Messing during the Metro-Galaxy telecast, there is oversees interest for Jean-Philippe Peguero, one of the few bright spots on this year's team. Messing specifically mentioned Norway.
Peguero, acquired early in the season, has been a pleasant surprise, scoring six goals in just seven matches, including a hat-trick against Chivas USA. That total is just one off from the numbers he posted in each of his two seasons in Colorado. The Haitian international holds a green card, makes a very reasonable $70,000, but would be a free agent after this year.
BigAppleSoccer confirmed the interest, saying that MLS rejected overtures from two European clubs, but is still negotiating with the third. Losing Peguero could be a huge blow to Metro, as they have failed to find consistent scoring from sources other than the Haitian. If the sale is to take place, it will definitely be time for Red Bull to prove that they can bring players in, and not just subject us to rumors.
Update: The Norwegian club has since been revealed to be Molde FK and the bid to be $800,000. "I'm not looking at other options right now, I'm just focused right now on getting this team on top and getting ready for the playoffs," Peguero told reporters. "I do like playing here."
