Could Vieri be New York bound?
August 11, 2006
Warning: this is nothing more than a rumor. However, MetroFanatic has received two tips, one from Italy and one from a local source, that the Red Donkeys are targeting former Azzuri striker Christian Vieri. Vieri, who missed out on the 2006 World Cup after being his country's leading scorer in the previous two tournaments, has recently quit Sampdoria, weeks after signing with the club. He spent the last season split between Monaco and AC Milan, scoring only four total goals in 15 matches. However, Vieri scored 13 Serie A goals for Inter as recent as the 2004-05 season, and was the top scorer in both Spain (1998, 24 goals for Atletico Madrid) and Italy (2003, 24 goals for Inter). For Italy, he has scored 23 goals in only 49 matches.
Vieri's vagabond career saw him play for nine teams in nine seasons, taking him from Pisa to Ravenna to Venezia to Atalanta to Juventus to Atletico Madrid to Lazio to Inter. He stayed six years at that latter stop, before a move to Monaco, a loan to AC Milan, and signing with Sampdoria. His quitting the club came as a surprise, and with his contract now terminated, who knows if he is set to retire, as it is speculated, or could a Metro sojourn be in his future.
