From Savarese to Guevara: ten Metro hat-tricks
October 17, 2006
Last year, after Amado Guevara had a three-goal game against Colorado, we looked at the six hat-tricks in Metro history; Guevara's three-goal came was the first in almost three years. Since then, four more have been added, with two more from Amado, the last in last weekend's must-win game versus Kansas City. So here is the recap of the last four, to be added to the original six.
August 21, 2005: MetroStars 3, Chivas USA 3; Amado Guevara
A little less than four months after his trick against Colorado, Amado did it again, finishing it off in a dramatic fashion against Chivas USA. His first came on a penalty kick in the 5th minute; after Chivas, led by newly-signed million-dollar Mexicans, scored the next three, Guevara added a second PK in the 69th. Now in injury time, with a free kick awarded far from goal, Youri Djorkaeff tricked the Goat defense, slid the ball to an unmarked Guevara, who one-timed it, bending it into the upper right corner to salvage a point for Metro.
May 20, 2006: New York 5, Chivas USA 4; Jean-Philippe Peguero
Coming into the game winless in their first six games to start the season and scoring just total of six goals in those games, Metro got an improbable victory. Newly-acquired Peguero played hero, first opening the scoring in the 20th off a Chris Henderson corner kick. He doubled the lead 18 minutes later, beating an out-of-goal Chivas keeper to the ball and delivering it home. After Seth Stammler gave Metro a three-goal lead with his first ever goal, Chivas fought back to 3:2. Stammler scored again, and Chivas replied. Then, Peguero hit a long low shot that went off the post and in; Metro would need the two-goal cushion as the Goats would add a PK in injury time to round up the scoring.
August 26, 2006: New York 6, Salt Lake 0; Edson Buddle
The largest win in club history saw an improbable performance from Buddle. The much-maligned striker, benched after weeks of ineptitude, came into the game with only three goals to his name. He would double that total here, coming in as a halftime sub and converting for a hat-trick in just 18 minutes. With Salt Lake down to ten since the match's eighth minute, Buddle made them pay. The first came in 54th after a perfect pass from Todd Dunivant. The second, seven minutes later, a header off a Marvell Wynne cross. On the last, in the 72nd, Buddle did most of work, fooling the Salt Lake keeper with a turn-around. Metro would pile on three more, from Jordan Cila, Dunivant, and John Wolyniec. Buddle would go the rest of the year without scoring another goal.
October 14, 2006: New York 3, Kansas City 2; Amado Guevara
A clutch performance like no other from Guevara. Metro came into the match needing a win and only a win to advance to the playoffs; it started bleakly as the Wizards opened the scoring 23 minutes in. But Chris Henderson was brought down in the box eight minutes later, and Amado converted the PK to his usual left. In the 60th minute, it was Wynne's turn to earn the penalty, and Guevara gave Metro the needed lead with another shot to the left. Then, in the 75th, off a Wiz turnover, Amado hit a long low shot that trickled in to the near post and proved to be the game-winner as Kansas City made it close with a late goal.
