Useless Julian Gomez cut
January 22, 2001 (Official Press Release)
Midfielder Julian Gomez was waived by the team this afternoon. Gomez, a 2000 discovery player, made three appearances (no points) off the bench during the regular season. He recorded his MetroStars debut on July 22, as a 75th minute substitute for Clint Mathis in a 4-2 home win over the Miami Fusion. Gomez hopes to return to his native Colombia and play with a local team.
In other news, Phil Wheddon announced his resignation today as goalkeeper coach to accept a position as an assistant with the Boston Breakers of the WUSA. Wheddon was appointed the MetroStars goalkeeping coach back on March 6, 2000.
