At the bubble with Tim Regan
February 23, 2007
MetroFanatic: Tim, how does it feel to be back with the team again?
Tim Regan: Good. It's a good group of guys. There's a lot of new players from when I was here last, and I look forward to working with them.
MF: How about your fitness? How far do you think you've come along, do you think you'll be ready for the season opener?
TR: Yeah, I should be ready for the opener. Everything is unknown at this point, every week is a way to determine where I'm at. Fitness-wise, my strength is the biggest issue after having the surgery that I did, and I'm making pretty good progress so far.
MF: Now, about the expansion draft, when you were left unprotected by Chivas USA... did you know you were going to be selected?
TR: I didn't know anything until the morning of the draft, about three hours before it actually occurred. I got a phone call informing me that it was likely going to happen, then it went down later that afternoon, that Toronto had picked me up and traded me here.
MF: Coach Johnston had a press conference after the draft where he said that some players were just going to be bargaining chips for money or other players. Did he say anything to you about that when you spoke with him?
TR: I did not speak with him directly, I talked with someone from the front office, I never spoke with anyone from the coaching staff on that team.
MF: So you had no clue that you would end up here, you had no idea what your status was with Toronto...
TR: Oh no, I knew right away. They told me right away. My first phone call from Toronto was to inform me... actually, my first phone call was from Bob Bradley telling me what happened, then the people from Toronto called to tell me I was traded here.
MF: Speaking of Coach Bradley, I know it's only been a couple weeks that you've been in camp, but could you tell us about some of the differences between Bob and Bruce?
TR: There's a personality difference between the two of them, just as there is between any two people. As far as coaching, they each have their own style. Bob is very specific in his training sessions, especially when you step away from the field and into a locker-room situation, a film session, and I haven't experienced that with Bruce yet. In the early going, I don't think you're going to find too many differences in drills. I think those two are the best at analyzing everything. At the end of the day, they don't often jump to conclusions, they let it all soak in, they have ideas they want to get across each day.
MF: Right now, Bob is the United States' interim manager... give us a couple reasons why you think he should be given the job full-time.
TR: I think the biggest one is that the guy works so hard, you know he's going to get the job done. You look at what he's done in the past... was he successful here? I think most would probably say "no", but he surely didn't fail. He took a team that had to be re-arranged by him and he was making progress with it before it was unfortunately cut short. I think that, in the long run, he understands how to evaluate players and he knows how to bring them into a camp and get them to win a game. I think he proved that already twice; in the Denmark game, not so much because it wasn't the highest quality opponent, but in the Mexico game, you're going against a very talented side. Bob had a big part in getting them ready to play and I think he did a great job.
MF: Last question, the people want to know: is the beard going to stay?
TR: (laughs) It'll stay for now. We'll see, I haven't trained in full yet. The biggest thing is, how hot will it be during summer? But it'll make it to the summertime. We'll see if I ever trim it too, I've kind of let it get a little scraggly. I don't mind it at this point, it's saving me from having to shave every week!
