Lifeless Metros drop out of Merconorte

MetroStars Millonarios

Playing perhaps their worst game of the season in front of a pathetic, pro-Colombian crowd, the Metros lost to Millonarios on an injury time goal, eliminating them from the "prestigious" Merconorte Cup. The Metros record ends at 3-3-0, but two of those wins were forfeits over Chivas.

Although the MetroStars did a good job in suppressing the Colombians' attack, their own attack was lifeless, with Adolfo Valencia looking like a clueless loser he's been all season. The substitution of Alex Dixon for Valencia made the Metros come alive, but it was too little too late as their numerous late attacks did not result in a goal. A tie would not be enough to set either team through, but Johan Viafara scored on a counter-attack in the 92nd minute, giving Millonarios a win and a second round berth.

The announced attendance was 7,221, but it couldn't have been more than 1,221, with more than 50% of those pro-Colombian. A pathetic way to end a season indeed.

Lineup: Howard, Perez, Petke, Jolley, Williams, Alvarez, Hernandez, Chung, Gilmar, Faria, Valencia. Subs: Dixon, Diop.
