The New York Red Bulls defeated the University of California 3-2 in Friday morning preseason action from The Home Depot Center in Carson, California. With the victory, the Red Bulls improved their '07 preseason record to 4-1-3.
Seventeen-year-old Jozy Altidore opened the game's scoring in the 11th minute. After a Cal corner kick, rookie Randi Patterson played the ball forward to Altidore at midfield. Altidore took a touch and sent it back to Patterson, who quickly passed to Chris Leitch on the right side of midfield. With Altidore making a run towards goal and avoiding the offside trap, Leitch sent an arcing through ball, which Altidore gathered at the top of the penalty area. He took two touches and fired a shot with the outside of his right foot past Cal 'keeper Justin Myers.
The Red Bulls made it 2-0 just three minutes later when Ansu Toure dribbled down the left side and sent a cross toward the back post. Joe Vide was there waiting and headed it in, giving New York a two-goal lead.
After Cal cut the deficit to one before halftime, Jerrod Laventure extended the advantage back to two in the 62nd minute. With the Red Bulls in possession at the top of the box, Laventure made a diagonal run to the left. Toure played a great ball that Laventure collected and beat Myers near post with the outside of his right foot.
