Media Day with Jeff Parke
March 21, 2007
MetroFanatic: Jeff, so you will be the first player in MLS history to wear #60.
Jeff Parke: (does a little fist-pumping dance)
MF: You're doing the dance, but I can't translate that to our readers.
JP: (laughs) Every year it seems that my number gets picked up by a big-timer coming it, better player or whatever, so I just grab a number. Nobody wears it (#60), but I also got it because I was the last pick.
MF: 60th pick.
JP: Yeah. Symbolic there.
MF: Some people claim that you and Carlos play negative soccer. And I've noticed late last season, that you've started to move forward, and play more attacking.
JP: In the beginning ot the year, we were playing three in the back, then we played four. It opens up a little bit. As the season goes on, your team becomes more fit, maybe a little more confident on the ball. You gain more confidence as the year goes on. The way we're playing, when Bruce came in, we spread things out, give us more room, makes it harder for the other team to defend our guys. You're fit, you're confident; you just try to make things happen. At that point of the season, we were at a tough point, we had a lot of ties, and we had to get some wins.
MF: So are you confident right now, at the beginning of the season?
JP: Yeah, it's tough sometimes, because the preseason is all for growing and getting confidence. I fele like I'm pretty confident right now. We'll see. You can have all the confidence in the world, but that's one thing, and then next thing you know, you make a mistake, and you're there, talking to reporters why you gave up a goal.
MF: How is your hamstring?
JP: It's coming along
MF: There was a rumor yesterday on the internet that you're gonna be traded for Eskandarian.
JP: Oh really? I haven't heard anything.
MF: It doesn't make sense, because they have no international slots.
JP: I want to be here, I want to play here. I haven't heard anything, but you never know. Hopefully, I can stay here, that's the best thing for my career.
MF: You first scored a goal in La Manga Cup, the greatest championship in Metro history...
JP: Yeah, yeah!
MF: And then you scored one against San Jose, and then nothing for a long time. What's uo with that?
JP: I'm in a dry spell. I could have had FIVE last year. I put myself in the right spots, I just have to work on my finishing. That comes with feeling more confident on the ball in the box and just working on it every day. I'm working hard on it.
MF: So you're saying, five goals this year?
JP: (laughs) No, no, but that would be great. I hope with the wins, a goal here and there would be great.
