Media Day with Jozy Altidore
March 21, 2007
MetroFanatic: Jozy, you really burst on the scene late last year, and now people expect you to be the starting forward, and score all these goals. What do you think about these expectations?
Jozy Altidore: Oh, they're high, but it's always good to set high expectations in the beginning, so you can try and succeed. As far as being "the guy", I still have a lot to learn. It's nice to be called "the guy", it's pretty good.
MF: Even when we talked last year, you seemed pretty mature for your age. Where does that come from?
JA: I don't know. I guess it's just in my family. Eveyrbody in my family since they were very young, they just had to mature demeanor about them, and I carried on.
MF: You're gonna miss some time with the World Youth Championship?
JA: It's possible, if I make the squad.
MF: You'll make the squad.
JA: (laughs)
MF: There are some problems if you don't make the squad.
JA: Yeah, so if that does happen and I miss some time, a month maybe.
MF: Can you talk about last year, when you scored the goal in DC, and the series was tied for 15 minutes. How were you feeling at the time?
JA: It was an incredible feeling, because I never scored a goal like that. First time in my life, to score something like that, to embrace the New York fans who were there, it was unbelievable, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's unfortunate that we allowed a goal in the last five minutes, but you learn from it.
MF: We heard that you're gonna be playing a 4-5-1 formation?
JA: Yeah, it's a 4-5-1 on defense, but on offense, it would be 4-3-3.
MF: Final question... "Josmer" or "Jozy"?
JA: (laughs) I guess "Jozy" is a fan favorite, so I'm gonna keep it that way.
MF: So I'm officially gonna change your name on the website to "Jozy Altidore".
JA: That's fine with me.
