Media Day with Marvell Wynne
March 21, 2007
MetroFanatic: Marvell, when we last talked, you were a rookie, now you're a year older. Can you talk about the experience you gained last year?
Marvell Wynne: Last year was just a great learning experience for me. I got to learn what it's like to be a professional player, I got to learn to play on the highest level of American soccer, and I've taken a lot from it to carry over to this year.
MF: It seems that as the year went by, you became more and more comfortable moving forward on the field.
MW: Definitely. When I first started off, I was very nervous. So I wanted to do my role as a defender, basically just stay in the back of the defense. As we went on and I got more comfortable, the coaches tried to get me more into offensive play, tried to get assists and get up the field. In the end, I got comfortable enough to do it, so I went.
MF: You did get a couple of assists. Can you talk about what it takes to server a good ball from the wing?
MW: I guess I need to learn to square my hips whenever I do certain crosses, depending whether I'm going hard to the near post or taking some off for the far post. I gotta see where the runners are going, and they have a lot to do with it as well, I can't just kick the ball into the center. I need to kick the ball into their path, either onto their foot or onto their head.
MF: And you also just missed scoring a couple of goals last year. Are you hoping to finish some of those this year?
MW: Yeah, hopefully. On the left side, we're gonna be getting a lot of crossed in. On the outside right now, we got Dave van den Bergh there, and he's gonna get a lot of crosses in. I feel if he's going on the line and I can get onto the back post, there could be a couple of scoring opportunities for me.
