Media Day with John Wolyniec
March 21, 2007
MetroFanatic: How does it feel to be back with this franchise?
John Wolyniec: It's good, it's good. It's nice to be in the hometown, to have your friends around. It's always exciting, a little more exciting to play for a team from where you grew up.
MF: Last year, you played on three different MLS teams, which I believe was only the third time in league history. What was that like?
JW: It was interesting. At some point, you get used to moving around a lot, but it's tough when it comes rapid fire like that, having to pick up in the middle of the season and moving twice was tough. It wears down on you a little bit, but I'm excited to be here, so I'm excited to get a full season in with one team...
MF: Unless you get traded again...
JW: (laughs) We don't need any of that. It's tough, but I'm excited to be here, hopefully it will give me a bit of energy, gotta get back on track.
MF: A lot of people have criticized you, saying you're not a 90 minute player, that you just score garbage goals. Not my opinion, but it's out there.
JW: That's fine, people can have their opinions, I'm out there just trying to win games. Whether I score or not, it's not really my focus. 90 minutes or not, it's not really my focus, it's just to be out there to do the best I can to help the team win. Each and every week I'm trying to get into the starting lineup, that's everybody's goal on this team, there's competition for spots. If I get the nod, then I get the nod, if I don't, I'm gonna be ready to come in and do the best I can to get us a win, whatever the situation may be.
MF: It seems that as that with time, you got a lot better with passing in tight spaces.
JW: That's the thing I was struggling with, coming into this league. I work hard, I've been pretty consisted at it though my years as a professional soccer player. Now it's paid off, and I'm gonna keep working on it, to try to be the guy that can connect plays and help create opportunities.
MF: Taking a trip down memory lane... Can you talk about how you were cut after being drafted by Bora?
JW: Ha ha.
MF: It might not be the best memory of your life...
JW: But I do remember it! Yeah, it was interesting, I got cut. I was drafted by the MetroStars, first round, and I was really excited, and definitely was in over my head a little bit. It was a huge step in the quality of play. I got through preseason, and the last roster was supposed to be in on April 1st, and I went into training that day, went through practice, and pretty much assumed I made the team. Went home and got a phone call from Charlie Stillitano, about 3 or 4 in the afternoon, telling that they've released me. They even took a fine for handing in the roster too late; I don't know if they were still undecided. It was tough, but at the same time, it was a blessing, because I got to the Rough Riders, and I learned a lot there under Paul Riley.
MF: And here you are, eight years later, the only guy still standing.
JW: Yeah, it's pretty amazing, the amount of players that have come through this organization, it's quite a turnover almost each and every year. To have been a part of that turnover...
MF: In both ways!
JW: In both ways. It's nice to be back. I'm just happy to be playing soccer and happy to be back in New York.
