Media Day with Seth Stammler
March 21, 2007
MetroFanatic: Your new teammate, Claudio Reyna, said some very complimentary things about you recently. How accurate do you think he's being with where you are as a player right now?
Seth Stammler: I don't know. I mean, obviously it's a very nice thing for Claudio to say. I don't know if it's warranted right now. Obviously I put a lot of emphasis on moving up to the national team, in the future I'd love to play for the national team but I don't know if it's going to be an option, and how soon. But I try to get better every day, and playing with Claudio, it makes things a lot easier for me. He's not afraid to play both ways; he'll go forward in attack and he'll get back and join the defense. He certainly makes it easier on all of us.
MF: Do you think having Bruce as your coach makes it easier for you to get into that national team pool?
SS: I don't know, I'm not sure what his relationship is with Bob. Obviously Bruce is knowledgeable about the situation, he knows how things are run over there, and hopefully if an opportunity comes up he'll put in a good word for me.
MF: Speaking about Bob, obviously you've had professional experience with him in the past, how well do you think he's suited for his current role?
SS: I think Bob's a good coach as he's proven over the years. Maybe he wasn't that successful with the New York team, but Bob drafts well, he gets players he likes, he knows what they do best and that's the sign of a good coach. I think he'll be successful, and I think in the games so far he's done well. He's given a lot of young players opportunities, and for the most part they've performed well. He's showing us that there's a new generation of US Soccer ready to take the lead.
MF: You've now been a part of Bob's system, Mo's system, and Bruce's system, all in different roles on the field. Do you think your abilities suit the way Bruce plans to utilize you?
SS: At the end of last season, I talked to Bruce, and he said he liked me in central mid. I think I do have the ability to create something going forward, but I'm responsible enough to come back, break up plays, be trouble for people defensively. That's a job I'm willing to do and I'll enjoy it. Bruce says that's where he wants me and I'm very happy to play there.
MF: The last time we talked to you, this time last year, you had played a little at forward in preseason, and you were excited to be more involved in the attack. You ended up scoring a few goals last year... you had to be happy to see that part of your game develop.
SS: Yeah... I didn't have as many goals as I liked, there's never enough of those. But every goal that comes, you're happy to score. This year, hopefully I'll still be able to score some goals. I don't know how many opportunities there will be playing central mid, but it doesn't matter so long as we're able to make a better run in the playoffs this year.
