Metros drop Unity Game #2
November 3, 2001 (Official Game Summary)
DC United guest player Jorge Rodriguez (Dallas Burn) scored the only goal of the game in the 71st minute to give the home side a 1-0 win over the MetroStars in a Unity Games doubleheader at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC Saturday night.
DC United, which featured various guest players such as former German international Jurgen Klinsmann and Jeff Agoos (San Jose), were outshot by the MetroStars, 10-5, on a cool evening before a crowd of 22,245.
Rodriguez scored on a volley when he knocked a high pass outside the box past the outstretched hands of Paul Grafer for the game's only goal.
The MetroStars received their best chance to score in the 88th minute when Alex Dixon's chip shot, off a Petter Villegas cross, went over the crossbar, despite an open opportunity against goalkeeper Mike McGinty.
The MetroStars featured two guest players this evening with former England international defender Des Walker and Liberian midfielder Kelvin Sebwe. Walker, who played last spring for Sheffield Wednesday, played 69 minutes and stopped a scoring opportunity by DC United in the first half on a sliding save. Sebwe, who recently played for Panahaiki FC in Greece, played the entire second half of the charity game exhibition.
Tonight's loss brings to an end the 2001 season for the MetroStars. The players are expected to begin preseason in January with Portugal the tentative location for camp.
