Old pal Edson Buddle got the game-winner, and old pal Mo Johnston got the preseason win, as RBNY was downed by Toronto 2:1 in the second match of the Carolina Challenge Cup. Dave van den Bergh missed a late penalty kick that would have tied the game.
Toronto got on the board in the ninth minute as Alecko Eskandarian knocked home a Ronnie O'Brien cross. New York answered in the 21st, with John Wolyniec heading in a perfect van den Bergh pass.
Buddle's goal came in the 36th, as the much-maligned striker headed in an O'Brien free kick. The lead stood through and beyond the 76th-minute penalty kick, with Greg Sutton saving van den Bergh's attempt.
