Metro defense is cracking. With backups filling three out of four spots on the backline, New York got trashed in DC, 4:2, and has now allowed eight goals in its last three games after letting in just four in the previous eight.
Ronald Waterreus finally recovered enough to take back his place in the nets, and Clint Mathis returned from his bogus suspension to slide in behind Juan Pablo Angel as Jozy Altidore sat. The rest of the lineup remained the same, including Markus Schopp at right back.
The Scum struck first in the 15th minute, as Whiny Ben Olsen, possibly in an offside position, beat Seth Stammler and got to the end of a cross through the box. But just three minutes later, Metro replied, as DC failed to clear the ball from their end, and a Dema Kovalenko shot went through the box, rebounded off a Scum defender, and tied the match.
Early in the second, Metro defense started to break. DC almost pulled ahead through Christian Gomez, and then did so through Luciano Emilio four minutes after the break. In the 60th minute, it looked like Metro got a reprieve as the Scum's Bobby Boswell got his second yellow for bringing down Altidore. But New York failed to capitalize on the advantage, and in the 72nd minute, Olsen doubled the lead, getting his second when a sliding Stammler failed to thwart Whiny Ben's attempt.
Olsen would complete his hat-trick on a long curving shot in the 85th, and Angel's seventh goal in six games pushed his scoring streak to five, but did little to change the outcome of a decided game.
Hopefully, the injury bug will go away, because Schopp is not a right back, Stammler had a bad game on the left, and Taylor Graham is... Taylor Graham.
Lineup: Waterreus, Stammler, Mendes, Graham, Schopp, Reyna, Kovalenko, van den Bergh, Richards, Mathis, Angel. Subs: Altidore, Parke, Ubiparipovic.
