Q&A with draft pick Luke Sassano
January 22, 2008
To complete the SuperDraft trifecta, we present an interview with Metro's third round pick, Luke Sassano. Sassano was drafted with the selection that was acquired for Clint Mathis and we affectionately called a "ham sandwich".
MetroFanatic: Where on the field did you play in college and where do you see yourself playing in MLS?
Luke Sassano: In college I've played all over the pitch. I played center mid and a little bit of forward as a freshman, right mid as a sophomore, right back as a junior and partially as a senior, and then I finished up my senior campaign as a center mid. I see myself either playing d-mid, outside mid, or outside back, but what it comes down to is whatever position the team is in need I'll be excited to contribute in whatever way I can.
MF: According to various reports, you did not have a good combine. Do you think that impacted your draft position?
LS: I tried not pay much attention to reports on the combine, so in that case I don't really know how my combine performance really impacted my draft position, but I'm happy the Red Bull and it's coaching staff decided to draft me and I couldn't be more excited for this opportunity.
MF: What are you feelings about playing for New York?
LS: I couldn't be more excited and stoked to play in New York. Not only is it a great organization with great players, great coaching staff, and fans, my whole extended family is from New York and New Jersey so I'm enthusiastic about the opportunity to be close to them and play in a great area.
MF: What is your impression of Juan Carlos Osorio?
LS: I'm excited to get the opportunity to play under coach Osorio where his reputation is top class. I'm hungry to improve as a player and help the team in any way I can, and I feel since he is a very smart coach who understands and reads the game very well, I couldn't have asked for a better situation as a young player.
MF: Are you Cal's best defender since Leo Krupnik?
LS: Leo was a great player for Cal. We've had a lot of great defenders come out before me since Leo. From players like Troy Roberts, Noah Merhl, Tyson Wahl and Steve Purdy, I've been lucky to play and learn from these guys, and they helped raise my game to a different level in my college career.
