Media Day with Mike Magee
March 25, 2008
MetroFanatic: Mike, you've missed big chunks of the past two years with injuries. Are you finally healthy again?
Mike Magee: Yeah, finally healthy. The past two years, I had a knee injury with many complications. All better now, I had a preseason, and my health is very good.
MF: You have been for a while the longest-tenured member of the team. You've basically seen it all the past five years. How do you stay alive while everyone else bites the dust?
MM: It's been definitely a long ride, ups and downs. I've been lucky enough to hang around and see the full transformation, now with Red Bull. I'm glad I did, there were times when you had no idea which direction this club was going, but now with the team, and the coaching staff, it's definitely a good time to be a Red Bull.
MF: Mark Lisi was nicknamed "the cockroach" by the local media for staying around so long. We've been trying to come up with a nickname for you, since you've been around longer than Lisi was.
MM: I hope it's not cockroach!
MF: Do you want to comment on your MySpace page that was out there two years ago?
MM: I don't have a MySpace page.
MF: Well, there was a MySpace page of someone claiming to be Mike Magee, and there was a picture of someone who looked like you on that page. No?
MM: I don't have MySpace.
(Here we pause and discuss the picture. Magee looks shocked and mentions that at least he is famous enough for someone to make a fake page about him. We believe him. In case you have no idea what we're talking about, and even if you do, let's just move on, it's not worth any further discussion.)
MF: Moving on, name your three favorite things about Austria.
MM: Wow! It's hard to think about three things. I'll say one long thing. To see their stadium, their training facility, the way they're treated, the way Red Bull has taken over their city, the footprint they've put on Salzburg, the hope that that would happen here makes it very nice. It's a good thing knowing that they're investing money, and good marketing things in Salzburg, and you just hope that it can translate to New York.
MF: You've been sometimes described as a man without a position. Do you have a position for this year?
MM: Not yet! (laughs) I'm still being tossed around. I played where Claudio is playing, I've been playing there for a month now, trying to get my fitness back. Anywhere on the field is good for me.
