Media Day with John Wolyniec
March 25, 2008
MetroFanatic: John, you're actually here for the second straight media day! It seems that you should have been traded and then returned by now...
John Wolyniec: Yeah, it's an odd feeling being in the same place couple of years in a row to start off. But it's a good feeling, it's good to be in New York, and to be with this team, which is a great group of guys. I'm very happy to be here.
MF: Maybe you could be the deputy mascot or something?
JW: (laughs) I don't know about that. (laughs)
MF: What do you see your role as this year?
JW: Pretty much, as every year, I want to be a starter. Be on the field to begin games and score some goals. If that's the case, then so be it, if not, I'm gonna work hard to push the guys who are ahead of me. When I get my chances, I'll do the best that I can and keep this team moving in the right direction and bring home the championship. That's my goal right now.
MF: Onto more important things, what were your three favorite things about Austria?
JW: Three FAVORITE things about Austria?
MF: FAVORITE.
JW: (pauses) The cappuccino. Ummm... the... Red Bull hangar was pretty cool, to see all that antique aircraft. And the town of Salzburg had a lot of charm. It's definitely a beautiful town.
MF: Last year, we had a vote for the best goal in Metro history. It was between Clint's run against Dallas, Gio's bicycle, and your wonder goal, and you won with something like 46% of the vote.
JW: That's an honor. I'll never forget that goal. It was a great day.
MF: Everyone still thinks you got robbed for Goal of the Year. Even five years down the road.
JW: Yeah, it hurts me a little bit too, and at the same time, it was still a great feeling.
MF: On the other hand, Damani Ralph's career could be over at this point, and you're still kicking.
JW: Yeah, I've been kicking for a while. People still come up to me and ask me about that goal. It's always nice to talk about it, it brings back good memories.
MF: And there's that great shot of you with your arms raised and Jon Busch in the background, stunned.
JW: I actually had that on my computer for a while as my screensaver. (laughs)
