Media Day with Jeff Agoos
March 25, 2008
MetroFanatic: It's your second year in a similar role with the team, how comfortable do you feel in your position after having transitioned from being a player to an administrator last season?
Jeff Agoos: I think the longer you do something, the better you get. I'm still at the very beginning of the long process of what I want to accomplish here at Red Bull, and there's still a long way for us to go as an organization. I'm happy with everything that's happened so far but I know there's a big job ahead for not just me, but everybody.
MF: When your old position (Technical Director) was eliminated, and the new position (Sporting Director) was created that you currently occupy, there were never really any other names put out there other than yours as candidates for the position. Was there ever any doubt in your mind that you would continue on in this new role?
JA: You never know what's going to happen whenever there's change, and I know that Marc and the organization wanted to make a change. Obviously I had a long history with Bruce as did Richie, so you never know what's going to happen. I felt comfortable in knowing what I wanted to do with this club and I think it was congruent with what Red Bull wanted to do. In the end, I told Marc flat-out that whatever position you wanted me in, whatever you wanted me to do, I'll do the best job that I can trying to bring this club a championship.
MF: You mentioned your history with Bruce...you obviously had a very good idea of what he looked for in a player. How much of an adjustment has it been to what coach Osorio wants to do, the kind of players he wants to bring in?
JA: I don't think either coach is different in terms of what they want to bring in, they both want to bring in quality players. That's the same, but obviously in terms of style it can be very different. It's taken a little time to understand Juan's style, how passionate and driven he is. On the other end, I think one of the big pluses we had this preseason is that Juan now understands what our team and our organization is all about. He did, after all, basically come from England to Colombia to half a season with Chicago before he ended up here.
MF: Both you and coach Osorio share the duties in scouting and acquiring new players. How exactly does it work between you and coach Osorio in that regard, when it comes time to acquire a new player?
JA: First we identify the player, however that happens, whether it's through me or through Juan or Richie. We work as a team, the technical staff, to try and identify a player we're interested in. Once that's done, we discuss whether it's the right guy at the right position, the right price point, there's a number of factors that go into it. It's much harder to sign a guy here than it is elsewhere when you can just go into the market and find somebody. In terms of this league, with the salary cap and the eighteen-man senior roster, it's very difficult to find the right person.
MF: We're now at the point where the season is about to start for most of the league, and the transfer window is closing on April 15. We've heard coach Osorio say there are a couple targets the club has in mind, how confident are you that you'll have a couple more good players on this roster before that window closes?
JA: We have leads on a couple different players, but whether or not that happens is more of a timing issue than anything. Whether it happens now or during the second transfer window remains to be seen. There are so many things that could happen, it's a very difficult process to go through signing a player. We just don't know at this point how it's going to turn out, sometimes it can be done within the same day, sometimes it takes a month or more. Obviously, a lot of it is out of our hands, but we do want to strengthen the team. We just need to make sure it's the right player.
MF: About the discovery process... there was a claim put on Lider Marmol, can you update us on that?
JA: The situation as I understand it is that the league is still in negotiations with Lider and his agent. If he does sign, Chicago has the first right of refusal on him. If they pass on signing him, we would have the next shot at him.
MF: Is there a deadline for when Chicago has to have their answer in to the league?
JA: Not that I'm aware of. The league is doing the negotiating, it's out of our hands.
MF: Do you want to comment on the discovery process? How one team can file a claim on a player they may not even be interested in just to block another team from acquiring that player?
JA: It's the league's policy, and I think there can be a debate as to whether it's right or wrong. However, that's how the rules are written, and we have to adhere to those rules.
MF: One last question, you've been called the "King of MLS Rings", you're arguably the most successful defender in American soccer history...what sort of success can you promise to the fans of this club?
JA: I don't think you can ever promise a championship. Not even the best teams can promise a title every year; Madrid, Barcelona, the best of the best can't promise a championship. That being said, we always step on the field from day one with that goal in mind. We want to win a championship, we want to win silverware, want to win the Open Cup, just want to win every time we get on the field. That's the attitude this team will emulate from the start all the way through the end of the season.
