Did you know that, back in 1996, the MetroStars won their first two matches at RFK? Since then, they've won just five other times at their hated rivals, getting trounced time and time again. It doesn't matter if Metro is fielding a full lineup, or a shortened one like tonight. It doesn't matter if they're playing well coming into the match, or not. With few exceptions, RFK is Metro graveyard, as it was tonight, as DC Scum took Metro apart, winning 4:1 and jumping them in the standings.
Somehow, there were only two changes from last week's lineup: Luke Sassano came in for Mike Magee, and John Wolyniec replaced the injured Juan Pablo Angel.
The Scum's first goal came in the 23rd minute, as a pass went around Kevin Goldthwaite and onto Fred da Silva, who crossed to Luciano Emilio for an easy score. Three minutes late, Clyde Simms drilled in a low shot off a short free kick to double the lead. In first half injury time, Chris Leitch decided to dribble out of the back, but was stripped of the ball. Jon Conway made a great save on the initial Scum shot, but no one took care of Emilio, who easily knocked home the rebound.
Nine minutes into the second half, Metro shortened the lead, as seconds after Wolyniec headed into the crossbar, Dave van den Bergh drilled a shot into the Scum net from outside the box. The surge was short-lived, as five minutes after the Metro goal, DC got a breakaway, and Emilio converted his third of the game.
The rest of the game was as anticlimactic as waiting for Metro to sign a player of substance.
Oscar Echeverry made his return to the lineup for the first time since the second game of the season, played the entire second half, and touched the ball maybe twice.
Lineup: Conway, Goldthwaite, Parke, Boyens, Leitch, Stammler, Sassano, Borman, Richards, van den Bergh, Wolyniec. Subs: Echeverry, Mendes, Freeman.
