Reserves ride through Long Island, 2:1

The New York Red Bulls Reserves defeated the Long Island Rough Riders, 2-1, this morning at Montclair State University.
New York generated the better offensive chances in the opening half of the 70-minute match. Mike Magee and Hunter Freeman sent dangerous crosses into the area, but the Red Bulls could not find the back of the net. On the defensive end, Carlos Mendes played well on the central defense, diffusing several threats.
Chris Megaloudis got the Red Bulls on the scoreboard first, scoring an unassisted goal in the 40th minute. The striker displayed a nice step-over move before slotting the ball to the far post for a 1-0 lead.
New York doubled its lead five minutes later, as guest player Walter Rice took a nifty through ball, deked the defender, and placed the ball past the Long Island keeper.
A penalty kick in the 61st minute halved the lead, but New York did not allow the equalizer in the closing minutes.
Caleb Patterson-Sewell stopped five shots in net for the Red Bulls, including two athletic stops in the same sequence in the 51st minute.
