Ten Best: Metro ties

They say that ties are a lot like kissing your sister. We wouldn't know. However, so often ties do leave a bad taste in one's mouth... but not always. Sometimes, a tie is more than a welcome result. So here they are, the ten most glorious... no, that's too much, the ten most adequate ties in Metro history. You will note that there is nothing pre-2000, since before the millennium, MLS settled ties with shootouts.
10) August 9, 2003: Chicago 1, MetroStars 1
2003 features prominently on this list. With four minutes left in the match, a Mike Magee led to a save on Mark Lisi, but Steve Jolley pounced on the ball, knocking it in to steal a point.
9) September 3, 2005: MetroStars 2, Kansas City 2
Wearing orange shirts to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina, the Metros went down one minute into match. But a clever short free kick, Amado Guevara to Youri Djorkaeff, tied it. Metro would go down again in the second, but a curling Ante Razov free kick two minutes from time earned the draw.
8) August 21, 2005: MetroStars 3, Chivas USA 3
This was supposed to be easy, but it sure didn't turn out this way. Guevara opened the scoring with the penalty kick, but the Goats' newly-signed million-dollar-plus duo of Francisco Palencia and Juan Pablo Garcia made it 3:1 before the break, abusing former Goat in the center of Metro's defense, Ryan Suarez, in the process. Another Guevara PK made it 3:2. Then, four minutes into stoppage time, a short free kick (this time, Djorkaeff to Guevara) resulted in a spectacular chip by El Lobo to prevent Metro from an embarrassing loss.
7) April 16, 2005: MetroStars 2, Kansas City 2
One one glorious afternoon, the King of Goals was the King of Metro. Sergio Galvan Rey, with two goals to his name in all of 2004, matched that total in the second game of the 2005 season, but not before Metro went down 2:0 in the first half. Galvan Rey's first came right before halftime, and the second, sent directly at KC keeper Bo Oshoniyi, somehow trickled through.
6) August 6, 2005: Dallas 2, MetroStars 2
It was Djorkaeff at his best, ruining the opener of Pizza Hut Park. Down 2:0 at the half, Youri got one back two minutes in, and then, seconds after Michael Bradley saved one off the line on the Metro end, the Frenchman placed the shot from outside the box off the goalpost and into the net.
5) August 30, 2008: DC United 0, New York 0
It's tough for a scoreless draw to get on this list, but this one has a place. Still no goals 80 minutes in, the Scum had a chance to take a lead after an Andrew Boyens foul inside the box. Jaime Moreno stepped up for the penalty kick and missed it wide left, giving Metro their first shutout in DC ever.
4) August 16, 2003: Los Angeles 1, MetroStars 1
Wolyniec tied the match with five minutes left in regulation, knocking home a rebound from a Clint Mathis header. But what stood out most was Jonny Walker's incredible performance in the net, stopping LA time, after time, after time.
3) September 28, 2003: DC United 1, MetroStars 1
We're not done with 2003 yet. All looked doomed five minutes into injury time, when Metro earned a free kick deep in midfield. Magee got behind the Scum defense, took a perfect pass from Lisi, and headed in the game-tying goal.
2) May 8, 2004: San Jose 5, MetroStars 5
This game had almost everything: great goals and a great finish, just not great defense. Metro went up early on a long shot by Cornell Glen, but the Quakes made it 2:1. Joselito Vaca scored his lone Metro goal next, from way outside the box. Then, it was 3:2, but right before the break, Fabian Taylor mimicked Vaca to tie it again. The Quakes would go up 5:3, but Guevara buried the PK after a Jeff Agoos foul, and then, in the 90th minute, Glen heeled home an Eddie Gaven to end a crazy match.
1) July 12, 2003: New England 3, MetroStars 3
Tim Howard's last game with Metro could not have started worse. 50 minutes in, it was 3:0. All looked doomed. Then, John Wolyniec was brought on for Moreno. And somehow, the game changed. In the 66th, Woly took a long pass from Lisi and made it 3:1. In the 73rd, Magee pressured the Revs' Adin Brown, resulting in a bad clearance and an own goal by Daouda Kante, 3:2. Then, three minutes after, a Lisi pass was met by Ricardo Clark's head to make it 3:3 to send Timmy out maybe not a winner, but at least somewhat happy.
