Butler, 2001
From Savarese to Mbuta: Metro debut scorers (Part 2)
September 29, 2008

  • July 4, 2001: Tampa Bay 1, MetroStars 2; Michael Butler
One game, 24 minutes, one game-winning goal three minutes into injury time is Michael Butler's Metro career. Obscure Metro Files has more. Metro goals: 1

  • May 25, 2002: MetroStars 1, Kansas City 1; Mamadou Diallo
The hated Diallo came to the Metros, scored in the 42nd minute off a Tab Ramos feed to tie the match against the Wiz, and promptly begged the fans to love him. The love never came, as his early success was followed by a disastrous end to the season, and prompt departure. Metro goals: 11

  • July 16, 2003: Mid-Michigan 0, MetroStars 4; Mike Nugent
The first Metro to make his debut in the Open Cup and score on it, Nugent did so on his first touch, off a Mark Lisi cross in the 87th minute to make it 3:0. He would only play for Metro twice more, and not score. More in Obscure Metro Files. Metro goals: 1

  • April 2, 2006: DC United 2, New York 2; Edson Buddle
Two and a half seasons pass before we see another debut scorer, and it's Buddle, who gave Metro a two-goal lead in the 18th minute, scoring into an empty net after the Scum keeper dropped the ball. The lead was lost in the second half, and Buddle would go on to score just five more in his Metro career -- three in an 18-minute span versus Salt Lake -- and didn't even make the bench late in the season. Metro goals: 6

  • May 5, 2007: Los Angeles 3, New York 1; Juan Pablo Angel
Angel made his debut as a sub in the Open Cup qualifier; regulation would end goalless. Metro would go down 2:0 in overtime, before Angel curved a free kick in the 109th minute for his first of many Metro goals. In less than two seasons, he is currently fourth all-time and keeps climbing. Metro goals: 31+

  • May 19, 2007: New York 4, Columbus 0; Sal Caccavale
One game, two minutes, one garbage goal two minutes into injury time is Sal Caccavale's Metro career. He is MLS's record-holder in goals per minute. Metro goals: 1

  • September 27, 2008: New York 4, Colorado 5; Matthew Mbuta
The man who prompted this rundown, Mbuta scored off a Mac Kandji feed in the 74th minute, just four minutes after entering the game, to tie the match at 4:4. Metro would lose on a late goal. Will his career parallel Savarese... or Caccavale? Who knows... Metro goals: 1+
