Ten Best: Metro vs Fire
October 22, 2008
A year ago, Metro gave up a bounty to pry Juan Carlos Osorio away from the Fire. This week, they go into Chicago, knowing that a win -- and a win only -- will guarantee them a playoff spot. So let's look back at the history of the rivalry, focusing on the best Metro moments, of course.
10) April 17, 1998: Chicago 0, MetroStars 1
In the first ever meeting between the two teams, the lone goal comes when Alexi Lalas heads a Kerry Zavagnin free kick.
9) September 1, 2007: New York 1, Chicago 0
With Osorio on the sideline for the Fire, Metro gets the best of its future coach, winning on a goal by Juan Pablo Angel in the 75th minute.
8) July 25, 2004: MetroStars 2, Chicago 1
Bob Bradley wins his 100th match, doing so against his former team. The Metros came back after an early goal by the Fire to tie on a penalty by Amado Guevara and win on a goal by John Wolyniec. It's their first win over Chicago in two years.
7) September 30, 2006: New York 1, Chicago 0
Desperately needing a win for a late-season playoff push, Metro gets one from the foot of 16-year-old Jozy Altidore. The goal, coming off a perfect cross from Marvell Wynne, was thought to be a glimpse of Metro future. Little did we know.
6) May 24, 2007: New York 3, Chicago 0
It was all over soon after it began. Altidore scores 55 seconds into the match, then the earliest goal in Metro history, and Angel scores just two minutes after that. He adds one in the second half for good measure, faking out the Fire's Chris Armas.
5) May 14, 2005: Chicago 0, MetroStars 3
The MetroStars stun Chicago at Soldier Field, as Guevara pounces on a turnover and scores the first, and Eddie Gaven gets two more for a dominating victory.
4) May 5, 2000: MetroStars 4, Chicago 1
Metro score early, with Mark Chung tallying just four minutes into the match. It's over by the end of the half, as Steve Jolley and Clint Mathis score their first Metro goals just a minute apart. It ends 4:1 with Valencia hitting a penalty for the final margin.
3) June 22, 2002: Chicago 0, MetroStars 1
In a scorching day in Naperville, Tim Howard plays an amazing match, stopping Fire attack after Fire attack. In the 81st minute, Rodrigo Faria scores the lone goal of the match. Howard's heroics are not over as he has to be at his best to preserve the victory.
2) May 31, 2005: MetroStars 2, Chicago 1
With a big crowd staying after the England-Colombia friendly, the Metros start lackadaisically and go down on a penalty kick. Wolyniec evens it in the 76th, heading in a Guevara free kick. Then, late in stoppage time, Abbe Ibrahim causes a turnover, gives the ball to Guevara, who hits it, and the ball curves, curves, curves into the corner for a terrific win.
1) September 30, 2000: MetroStars 2, Chicago 0
The King returns as Mike Ammann, not fully recovered for his injuries, comes back in the playoffs. The Metros, completely dominated by the Fire just four days earlier, dominate one themselves. Chung and Valencia score and Ammann posts the first shutout in Metro playoff history as the series is evened.
