Ten Best: Metro midfielders (update)
November 24, 2008
Since we first looked at the ten best midfielders in Metro history, an update has to be made. For descriptions of the initial top ten, see the original article, as well as last year's update.
10) Dane Richards, 2007- Maybe the fasted player in Metro history, he blazed up and down the right flank during his first two years with the team. Six goals and 14 assists so far, an amazing playoff game in Houston where he scored the first and set up the other two... if he only learned to cross better, he might become unstoppable in MLS.
9) Ricardo Clark, 2003-04
8) Seth Stammler, 2004-
Defensive midfield? Left midfield? Right midfield? Central midfield? Left back? Center back? Right back? Where has Stammler not started? He made his name in the 2005 playoffs, and has been seemingly ever-present for Metro (but at what position?) since. Stammler is best in defensive midfield, and always seems to chip in with a key goal or assist when needed.
7) Mark Chung, 1999-2001
6) Mark Lisi, 2002-06
5) Eddie Gaven, 2003-05
4) Tab Ramos, 1996-2002
3) Roberto Donadoni, 1996-97
2) Dave van den Bergh, 2007-
Arguably the best crosser of the ball in Metro history, he followed a solid 2007 with a terrific 2008, scoring seven goals and adding five assists in the regular season. The Walking Dutchman carried Metro for long stretches of time and was arguably the team's MVP. Then, in the playoff semifinals, van den Bergh scored the biggest goal in team history in a 1:0 win over Salt Lake that put Metro into its first MLS Cup.
1) Amado Guevara, 2003-06
