The Red Bulls announced today that defender John Gilkerson will not be returning to the club in 2009.

"John contacted us in the offseason and decided to pursue other options. We wish him the best of luck," said Sporting Director Jeff Agoos.

Gilkerson was selected by the Red Bulls in the third round (35th overall) of the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft out of Winthrop University. He did not play in a first team regular season game, but was the only Red Bull to feature in every minute of every MLS Reserve League game in 2008.

Update: Gilkerson signed with the Carolina Railhawks of the USL.
