Media Day with John Wolyniec
March 16, 2009
MetroFanatic: John, people want to know if you were approached by "Dancing with the Stars" yet, as well as the origin of the Thriller dance.
John Wolyniec: The origin was a bet, I was propositioned by Shawn Oliver. He actually gave it out to the team, to anyone who would do it after a goal would receive a certain amount of money.
MF: How much money?
JW: (laughs) Can I discuss that? I don't think we can discuss those terms. It was a decent amount. I wasn't gonna do it cheap.
MF: But you got the money.
JW: He came through. Now, as far as "Dancing with the Stars", no, despite all my efforts. All my phone calls, emails, none of them have been returned.
MF: Steve Guttenberg did "Dancing with the Stars"...
JW: Oh really! Did not know that.
MF: That's the only think I know about "Dancing with the Stars".
JW: Yeah... I tried to get on the show, but I don't watch the show.
MF: But you'd do it offered?
JW: (laughs) Again, money would have to come into play. I'm sure those guys get some coin.
MF: So John, you had a pretty weird season last year, with no regular season goals. All the fans were hoping you'd break through, and you finally did... in the playoffs.
JW: Obviously, it was a bit frustrating. As a forward, you want to score goals.
MF: Our goalkeeper outscored you...
JW: (laughs) Yeah. I was thinking about that when I saw the footage of that goal. It was tough to deal with, but I just kept working, and it was a tough year as far as getting time. We had many good forwards on the team.
MF: But you did get time in the playoffs...
JW: Yeah, when the playoffs rolled around, I started every game, I was fortunate enough to be in the squad for the most important games of the year.
MF: In the final, you scored, we were all happy, and then...
JW: Yeah, when I scored, I really thought that would be a big goal, but... We were pressing, down a goal, and you get the equalizer, really put the pressure on the other team. I really thought we had a good shot to win. And then, they scored on a corner, pretty quickly afterwards. I think it just deflated us, it was too much for us.
MF: It seemed that the whole team just completely...
JW: Yeah. Any time you go from that much of a high to such a low, it's really tough to come back from. Anybody who watches soccer knows that a goal like that is tough.
MF: If the preseason is to be believed, it's back to the bench for you.
JW: It's gonna be tough, we got a lot of talent on this team. I'm certainly not taking it for granted that I'm gonna start any given game, but I'll put my best efforts through the weeks and make sure I give myself an opportunity to get into the lineup or to push the person that is in front of me.
