Media Day with Danny Cepero
March 16, 2009
MetroFanatic: Danny, for those of us following your college career, have you graduated yet?
Danny Cepero: Yes! I was a December 2008 graduate. Finally. I think my parents are more relieved than I am. It's definitely something you have to do and I'm just glad I was able to accommodate it with my year in New York and get it done. When I left, I was close, it just took a little bit of effort on my part and the University was very good at working with me and make it easier for me. Defintely a weight off my shoulders.
MF: Do you want to talk about the first goal in the MLS Cup?
DC: Sure. Looking back at it, I was out of position. You can attribute it to inexperience. It was just a lapse on my part. I try not to harp on it too much. You're never gonna play perfectly. Unfortunately for us, goalkeepers, when you make a mistake, it's usually in the back of the net. I'd change it if I could, but it's gotta be something that you learn from, a character-building opportunity. I try not to beat myself up about it too much, that didn't make or break the game. It's a building block.
MF: John Harkes does not seem to be a fan of yours, always talking how you don't have the experience.
DC: It's a catch-22 with experience. If a player doesn't have enough experience, how does he eventually get that experience? He's gonna have to play. The coaching staff here is confident in my abilities. I'm there for a reason. Certainly last year, when I did have to play, coach Osorio, Des, and Richie, and the players said, we trust you back here, you're here for a reason, and we have the utmost confidence in you. For me, that's all that matters. The media, or analysts outside of our team can and will say what they want. For me, the most important thing is that my teammates and my coaching staff support me and have the confidence in me.
