The four straight home games were supposed to turn the season around. Surely, Metro would pick up a few victories that would vault them up the standings. Well, it was not to be. Tonight's 3:2 loss to Colorado ended the homestand at 1-2-1, and cemented Metro's place in the Eastern Conference cellar at a pathetic nine points from 12 games. And with seven out of next eight coming on the road...
Juan Carlos Osorio's lineup manipulations had Macoumba Kandji moving from left to central midfield and Dane Richards starting up front. Albert Celades shifted from the middle to the left.
Colorado opened the scoring in the 25th minute, when a perfect cross found Conor Casey at the goalmouth. Alfredo Pacheco left Casey all alone, and the forward's bald head roofed the ball over Jon Conway.
Metro tied the match in the last minute of the first half. Dane Richards' nice run was ended with a chop down by Cory Gibbs in the penalty area. Juan Pablo Angel stutter-stepped, faking out Matt Pickens, and converted down the middle.
Sadly, whatever momentum was supposed be gathered by that equalizer was not to be. Just three minutes after the break, Casey waltzed through the Metro penalty area, making it 2:1 after another perfect pass. And in the 60th, referee Ricardo Salazar made the game academic, calling a penalty kick on Albert Celades for a foul that took place outside of the penalty area. Mehdi Ballouchy converted.
Metro got it back to a one-goal deficit in the 73rd, after Pickens failed to hold an Angel free kick. Danleigh Borman pounced on the rebound, slamming it home. In injury time, John Wolyniec set up Kandji in the box, but the striker-turned-midfielder hesitated, and the chance went for naught.
So yes, seven out of next eight are coming on the road, where Metro has not won a regular season match in more than a year and has not scored this season...
