Metro destroys Toronto 5:0 to close out Giants Stadium
October 24, 2009
Metro seasons usually end in losses. With no luck in the playoffs to date, we're used to disappointment to wrap up the year. In 2009, disappointment came a long time ago. The playoffs have been a pipe dream since the early summer, and then an impossibility. And everyone involved, from the players to the fans, couldn't wait to get the terrible year over with. So over it is... in what fashion: a 5:0 victory over a Toronto team that needed a result to get into the playoffs.
Seriously... A 5:0 win. Who saw that coming? The team that struggled to score all year (they needed four goals to avoid being the worst-scoring team in MLS history), the team that was good for a defensive breakdown a game, that team finally came together... sadly, months too late.
Two goals for Macoumba Kandji: he opened the scoring in the second minute, with Juan Pablo Angel starting the play in midfield, Albert Celades, retiring after the match, flicking it forward, and Mac slotting it home. His second was the match's fourth in the 70th minute, as Kandji ran onto a terrible back pass to turn the riot into a laugher.
Two goals for the Cherubic Assassin: the first in the 33rd, burning Metro-for-a-day Adrian Serioux and placing a perfectly positioned shot into the far corner of the net. The second came in the 62nd, after an excellent forward pass from Jeremy Hall, who started on the left wing. It was Hall's first assist as a professional. (Hey Osorio! You don't need to be left-footed to play on the left! Dumbass.)
A exclamation point from Matthew Mbuta, who converted a penalty kick in injury time after Kandji was brought down in the box on a breakaway.
A great game from Bouna Coundoul, who stopped everything Toronto threw at him, making clutch saves, coming out of the net, commanding the box. An excellent game from the Metro defense, including Walter Garcia, who was forced to make his debut eight minutes into the match for an injured Mike Petke.
So that's it for 2009. And that's it for Giants Stadium.
Good riddance to both.
Lineup: Coundoul, Borman, Petke, Boyens, Johnson, Stammler, Celades, Hall, Richards, Kandji, Angel. Subs: Garcia, Ubiparipovic, Mbuta.
