Why does Jeff Agoos still has a job?
November 17, 2009
Some of you might not be concerned about Metro's current void at head coach and sporting director. Never mind the fact that RBNY should have been looking for a replacement for the past four months. The expansion draft is creeping up, crucial contract decisions should be made soon, the SuperDraft is around the corner... Whatever, some might say. The hirings will be made, and that is that.
Or is it? For, as SoccerByIves puts it, Jeff Agoos "continues to have input on team personnel decisions".
That's right, Jeff Agoos. The co-architect (can't take all of the credit away from Juan Carlos Osorio, of course) of one of the worst teams in league history. The same Jeff Agoos who is still, at least officially, the team's sporting director, even though the search for his replacement is ongoing. The same Jeff Agoos whose last two roster moves were giving a six-figure contract to bum Leo Krupnik and signing out-of-shape and now ready-to-bolt Walter Garcia.
You might remember that two years ago Agoos was in a similar position. His job as technical director was eliminated, and Agoos was treading water, running the team until Osorio was hired. Somehow, he parlayed that lame duck status into a sporting director position.
What's more, Red Bull has hinted that there might still be a place for Agoos in the organization. We ask, as what? Scout? Assistant to the traveling secretary? Maitre d' at Red Bull Arena? Why on earth would you give a man who has proven incompetent at his job with an opportunity to mess it up even further?
Stop dragging your feet, Red Bull. Dump Agoos. Hire someone competent. Is that too much to ask?
