Diego Serna notched a goal and assist to give the MetroStars a 2-1 win this afternoon against Italian club Perugia in Perugia, Italy.

The MetroStars, who took control of the action just after kick off, were on the board in the third minute when a Petter Villegas cross found Serna inside the box for a right-footed blast for a 1-0 lead.

The home side picked up the momentum after the goal controlling the midfield with various possessions until they broke through the defense in the 15th minute. Rocco sent a through pass to Cini Giorgio that beat Paul Grafer for the game-tying goal.

In the second half, the MetroStars opened the game controlling the midfield again behind the play of Byron Alvarez, Villegas, and Brian Kamler. They scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute on a header by 2001 Rookie of the Year Rodrigo Faria.

Faria, who has spent a portion of the Italian trip working on improving his conditioning after joining the team late, headed a cross from Serna for the 2-1 lead and eventual final.

The goal was Faria's second in two games after also scoring in Sunday's 7-0 rout of Swiss club FC Rot-Weiss 64.

Midfielder Ross Paule entered the game as a 50th minute substitute for Alvarez. Paule, who is with the team in Italy, is on the verge of having his new contract finalized with MLS and the MetroStars.
