Metro plays DC to a scoreless draw
February 20, 2010 (Official Game Summary)
In their first match against a MLS opponent in the 2010 preseason, the Red Bulls remained unbeaten with a 0-0 tie against D.C. United on Saturday afternoon at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. The Red Bulls have not lost in preseason so far, as they improved to 3-0-2.
In an even first half, both teams had chances to score. For United, midfielder Brandon Barklage's on-target header off a Christian Castillo corner kick was cleared off the line by Red Bulls guest player Enar Jaager in the 18th minute. Five minutes later, Danny Allsopp's blast from distance was parried away by a fully-extended Greg Sutton.
Red Bulls forward John Agudelo nearly pulled New York ahead in the 28th minute, flicking a header from a Joel Lindpere cross over the bar. Lindpere nearly scored 10 minutes later, hitting a first-time shot just past the left post from 20 yards out.
Agudelo forced United goalkeeper Bill Hamid to make a sprawling save with four minutes left in the half. New York midfielder Seth Stammler created a turnover and found Agudelo, who raced into the box and rifled a shot that Hamid got a hand on.
It was the same story in the second half, with both teams nearly putting their names on the scoresheet. Forward Conor Chinn hit the ball over the bar with less than 20 minutes left off an Ernst Oebster feed. Moments later, Chinn put it into the back of the net, but he was ruled offsides. On the other end, a long range effort by D.C.'s Daniel Wasson went straight at goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul, before substitute Thabiso Khumalo put his left-footed attempt just over the bar.
Red Bulls forward John Wolyniec (ankle) and defender Carlos Mendes (hip) made their returns to game action Saturday after being sidelined with surgeries last year.
