Media Day with Carlos Mendes
March 17, 2010
MetroFanatic: You've spent the past half-decade toiling in cavernous Giants Stadium, and now we're finally here at the brand new stadium. Your thoughts?
Carlos Mendes: I can't really describe it; it's just unbelievable. I've been here for five years, and we've heard about it constantly over the past few seasons. It's a huge day for this organization and for soccer in this country. We've set the standard with this stadium, and everyone's excited for the opportunity to play here. I'm proud to be a part of it.
MF: You're from Mineola, in an area that's always been a tough sell for this organization. What do you think the new stadium will do to get more people from that area out here?
CM: It's huge for a couple of reasons. It's going to be a lot easier for those people to get here through public transportation, that will make a big difference. The atmosphere at the stadium will also be a big draw. Giants Stadium didn't have the best atmosphere and I think when people come out here and see what it's like they'll want to come back. I think people in New York are excited, I've heard a lot of buzz about it back home.
MF: It's safe to say then that your opinion is that the team will attract enough fans to sustain attendance levels after the luster of the new stadium has worn off.
CM: I really don't see why not. We're in a huge community that loves soccer, I mean LOVES soccer, people whose backgrounds are from many different areas of the world where the game is appreciated. I just don't see why it won't work out in the long term with a stadium like this that can compete with anyone in Europe. Obviously we also need to do our part and win more games this year, but I think that we'll be able to deliver on that.
MF: Can you give us an idea of what changes have taken place since the new regime has come in?
CM: They've been very straightforward and honest. They came in and said that last year was a tough year, but they still have confidence in the people that are here. Everyone has put in a lot of hard work, and they've stressed that they want us to play with confidence. I definitely feel like things are moving in the right direction.
MF: Have you spoken with Hans about what your role is going to be on the team this year?
CM: My role is that same it's always been, to help the team win games, no matter what position they play me on the field. I'm focusing on staying healthy this year and being ready to play at all times. I'll play wherever the team needs me, that's not really an issue.
MF: Hans said recently that he doesn't plan to employ a holding midfielder this season. You've spent some time in the midfield in recent years, and as a defensive-minded player, does that hurt your chances of getting on the field?
CM: As a professional I've played most of my games at center back. I've enjoyed playing defensive mid, but like I said, I'll play wherever I have to. I don't look at that as hurting or helping me, I just need to be ready to play, stay healthy, and we'll see what happens.
MF: The team has spent a lot of time trying to find a starting right back during the preseason. You used to play fullback earlier in your career, has anyone discussed a return to that position?
CM: I've played a couple games in the preseason where I've filled in, and a couple games throughout the five years I've been here at fullback. Mainly though, I've been in the middle of the defense. I do have experience at right back though, and if the team needs me there I'll be ready to go.
