Old pal Cepero gets last laugh in the Open Cup
June 29, 2010
During the offseason, the Metro brass dumped Danny Cepero, who two years ago backstopped the team to the brink of the MLS Cup. Instead, the taller, more experienced, more expensive Greg Sutton was signed.
So far the move was proven to be right -- Cepero, now in USL2 with the Harrisburg City Islanders, hasn't exactly set the minor leagues on fire. And Sutton had played well in Open Cup qualifiers, allowing just a single goal in three matches.
So it looked like a done deal tonight -- Metro, off three straight league wins, arriving in Harrisburg to battle the home team in the Open Cup. Sure, most starters would be rested, but the "Baby Bulls" were in great form, right?
Wrong.
For Cepero shutout his former team through regulation and overtime, for 120 minutes, and Harrisburg got a goal in the 117th from someone named Dominic Oppong, who put a rebound past Sutton to dump Metro out of the Open Cup.
Hideous.
This debacle now joins the losses in 2008 to Baltimore, 2005 to Rochester, 2004 and 2001 to Charleston, and 1999 to Staten Island(!) on the list of the most pathetic results in team history.
The more things change...
