On August 17, 2006, we called it "the fourth coming of John Wolyniec". The much-beloved striker, who was sent to Columbus a year earlier, came back via Los Angeles. And this time, he stayed. Now, almost four years later, it looks like the end of the line has been reached. But this is not the first time we thought that.
36 goals for Wolyniec in a New York uniform, including some of the greatest and more important ones in team history. 2003, the amazing overtime winner against Columbus. The late goal against DC that put Metro in their first final. 2004, the goal at Dallas that clinched a playoff berth. 2008, the goal that iced the amazing playoff series win at Houston. The goal in MLS Cup -- Metro's only goal in MLS Cup. Ever.
But perhaps the image that will resonate will be from the terrible 2009 season, when Wolyniec rose above it all and walked off with MetroFanatic's Player of the Year. In a season where many of his teammates seemed to hang their heads low, Woly fought on. His last goal of 2009, which he somehow managed to score while being mauled down by New England defenders -- resulting in a season-ending injury -- is a testament to the warrior that John Wolyniec was.
To the warrior that he is.
