Media Day with Joel Lindpere
March 15, 2011
MetroFanatic: Joel, let's talk about the map. How close are you to the goal?
Joel Lindpere: I need to see. Do you have Arizona?
MF: Yeah, I got Arizona. Now, here's a very important question: when you travel through a state, do you consider that a visit?
JL: No, I need to step on the land. Same I don't call airports.
MF: Did you make a stop in Maryland, Connecticut, or Rhode Island? Fans need to know!
JL: No, but I'm getting close all the time. I still got a lot of work to do, but one day I want to say that I've made it! There's still Alaska... (laughs) I should take a cruise!
MF: Maybe just take a car and drive through the south. We were hoping that we get an open cup game in some weird state so you get to visit. People really care about this now.
JL: That's good. I like this too, because I'm following this on my toolbar.
MF: We're gonna get Oregon for sure, because you got Portland. But let's talk about soccer now. Last year was pretty good for you.
JL: Yes, I might say it was the best year of my career. When I went home, I had surgery after the season, which was a small disappointment for me. But if I look at my games, I felt like I had a very good long year. It worked out perfectly for me. You can say that you can always do better, but I can say that I did my best and it came out almost perfectly.
MF: The fans have really taken to you.
JL: I love it. I think I have given them what they want, and when I get this feedback it's easier to work for me. And with the club, with the fans, with everything, good communication, it's much easier to work on the field and off the field.
MF: This offseason, there were some rumors of interest from England, and people got scared.
JL: There were some clubs that were showing serious interest, but what can I do? I have a contract, and I'm a Red Bulls player, so if the Red Bulls say no, then I'm staying. There were two, three clubs after me. They were really serious about this, but if Red Bull says no, I cannot do anything. I'm not gonna get into a fight, I keep doing my job. Maybe one day I will be getting what I want, but I like it here, and if I keep going like I do, then I hope that one day they will see that this guy deserves more.
MF: And you like it here.
JL: I like it here. I love the stadium, the fields are good. Of course, when I started to play, every young guy looks at big clubs and big leagues, but I can improve myself. This is a challenge, so I took a challenge here. Let's see what's gonna happen. My aim is to work as hard as I can. I just want to play as much as I can, and get myself fit. I don't want to leave this place without MLS Cup.
