Media Day with Teemu Tainio
March 15, 2011
MetroFanatic: Teemu, so we have a Swedish coach, a Norwegian GM and now a Norwegian player, a Danish player, what do we need to complete the Scandinavian list?
Teemu Tainio: (laughs)
MF: A Finn.
TT: That was the only one missing.
MF: So talk about what made you come to MLS.
TT: It's a new chapter for me. Being in Europe for the past 13 years, I've been in a few good leagues, and then I got a chance to come here.
MF: What grabbed you?
TT: Just to win something.
MF: This team has never won something in 16 years. Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
TT: That bad.
MF: Except for La Manga Cup, the preseason thing.
TT: Hopefully we can change that thing, and they had a good season last year. That was one reason. Of course, living in New York is another.
MF: You didn't get much playing time at Ajax.
TT: That was also one reason why I wanted to move, because I didn't get to play as much as I wanted.
MF: Hans has been trying you a lot at right back in preseason. Is that where you are most comfortable, or...
TT: No, last game I played in the middle. That's my best position. But I don't really have any issues with playing right back.
MF: It looks like with Albright out, you might be the starting right back.
TT: I don't know, you have to ask the coaching staff that question.
MF: Are you still considering playing for the Finnish national team?
TT: No, I told them already that if I move here, I stop with the national team. That's done now.
