Media Day with Steve Jolley
March 19, 2002
MF: Steve, love your columns on the website.
Steve Jolley: We're expanding and launching justjolley.com. We're gonna have fun with it, it's gonna be an interactive site, I'll write the articles. It's gonna be fun. I'm gonna enjoy it.
MF: I was told that not everyone got the metaphor in your last column, with David and Florence.
SJ: It's unfortunate some people can't recognize sarcasm and wit. The great thing it, these things never bother me. I think it's funny, it's ironic that people have the criticism. But I enjoy the piece, and I let other people enjoy it. If they don't enjoy it, that's ok with me, because I enjoy doing it.
MF: You played every minute so far since you came to the MetroStars. Is that continuing?
SJ: Hopefully. God willing, that I don't have any injuries. I'll do what I can for the team.
MF: Diallo, it's this week.
SJ: I'm excited. He's a hell of a competitor, as you all know. It's a great first game of the season for us, it's gonna be wide open, there're gonna be a lot of goals, and I am looking forward to it.
MF: A lot of goals?
SJ: Oh yeah. On their side. Defensively, we have one of the better defenses in MLS last year, third, and now we solidified it more with some of the acquisitions that we had in the offseason. That's the least of our worries right now.
MF: Is there still any animosity with Diallo?
SJ: No, we joked about it actually at the all-star game. There's no animosity, we're competitors, so we're gonna compete. We can try to be friends off the field, but when you're a competitor, you die on the field, and that's exactly what we do.
MF: Many said you should have made the all-MLS team last year, do you see yourself going in the direction of the National Team?
SJ: I hope. A lot of people don't recognize the fact that I just started playing defense for the first time four years ago, so I'm still learning. It takes time. I also have experience in this league, and only being 26, I might have a bright future with the National Team.
MF: But we see players like Mulrooney, who is not exactly a better player than you are.
SJ: That stuff will come. I always said if you do your job, and you compete every game, things will happen for you, for the team's success, so I can have individual success.
