Media Day with Nick Sakiewicz
March 19, 2002
MF: Nick, the #7 pick was Mansour Ndiaye, but he is not on the team.
Nick Sakiewicz: Well, he elected to go back to school, and finish his school. He is still our property and we're gonna take a look at him once he finishes school and see if he makes the team, but quite frankly, I don't see very many draft picks making MLS rosters this year, the talent pool is just not so good.
MF: But you think with the #7 pick you could have gotten some 17-year old player, with a potential for the future, instead of a guy who won't show up.
NS: We knew he was not gonna show up, because he's finishing up his school. He'll show up when he finishes his school and he'll have the opportunity to make the team. It's gonna be a tough road. This team has a lot of talent, it's not gonna be easy to make this team.
MF: What's the Griffiths situation? Why was there a lottery when he went to Dallas, and why did you bring him back?
NS: We brought him back because he's a terrific player, and that's why we had him in the first place. But the league decided that because some other teams have expressed interest with him prior to our discovery of him, that he would be put in the lottery. We lost the lottery, actually the way it turned out was much better, because we ended up with Winston from Dallas and we got their first round pick for next year, and I think next year's draft is gonna be much better than this year's was in terms of quality of players. So we ended up with Winston and ahead of the game anyway.
MF: What's the situation with Joe Addo? Is he on the team officially?
NS: We'll know about it at 5 o'clock tonight. If not, he's our property, because he's going in the waiver draft.
MF: Last week, Dallas drafted Ali Curtis, who in a similar situation, then traded him to DC. If someone drafts Addo, would we trade something to get him?
NS: I don't know, until we officially get to it.
MF: Nick, there's also some talk about announcing of the announcement of the stadium around this time.
NS: In the next 8-12 months, we're gonna have a number of announcements on the stadium. The first set will be coming shortly, and we're working on that right now. I don't want to talk too much about it publicly, because not a lot of people believe we're gonna get it done, except the people that count right now, which are the ones we're negotiating the deal with.
