It's been a while, hasn't it? With only one victory in their last eleven league matches, Metro finally got back to the winning side of the ledger. And they did it in quite a fashion, trashing Toronto 5:0 behind goals from Thierry Henry, Luke Rodgers, Joel Lindpere, and two from Juan Agudelo. It was the fourth time in team history that Metro won by at least five goals in league play.
After Bouna Coundoul's second straight game with a terrible mistake, "Clever" Hans Backe once again used his nimble brain to change goalkeepers. So in went Greg Sutton. The front line change entirely, with Henry and Rodgers stepping in for Mehdi Ballouchy and Agudelo.
Metro opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. Jan Gunnar Solli made a run on the right side and centered the ball into the box. As a pathetic defender fell, the ball went past Rodgers and to Henry. Titi, unmarked, had all the time in the world to pick his favorite corner.
Five minutes later, Solli made another run on the right side, and found Rodgers in the penalty area. The bald Englishman juggled the ball once, then hit a thundering volley for his sixth goal of the year.
Just before the halftime whistle, it looked like Metro had their third. Dane Richards was taken down just outside the right edge of the penalty area. Lindpere's free kick sliced through the box and into the net, but the goal was called back due to a foul in the box.
If the game was ever in doubt, it was settled seven minutes into the second half after a frantic exchange. First, Sutton did his best to get his hand on a Toronto shot to knock it off the post. Then, going the other way, Henry sprung Richards, who was off to the races. The Mohawked Jamaican then found Lindpere, and this time, the referee could not thwart the amazing Estonian. Lindpere took two touches and, from the top of the box, placed it into the left corner. It was his fourth goal in three games.
The rout was on in the 67th minute, when sub Agudelo burned the ball into the net, rising to head in a Lindpere corner kick. The duo combined again one minute from injury time, when Lindpere stole the ball in the penalty area, and crossed the ball in front of the net. The youngster stuck his foot out, completing the trashing.
The only negative of the match was Teemu Tainio's yellow card, which means he has to miss the next game due to caution accumulation.
Lineup: Sutton, Miller, Ream, Mendes, Solli, Tainio, McCarty, Lindpere, Richards, Henry, Rodgers. Subs: Agudelo, Ballouchy.
