Media Day with Tim Howard
March 19, 2002

MF: Tim, so the big question is, you got the first cap, you got the shutout. Are you going to the World Cup?
Tim Howard: I have no idea, your guess is as good as mine.

MF: What are your feelings, because everyone is saying you're #3 right now.
TH: That's the speculation, I hope that's the case, but we have another month to go, and hopefully I'll have a chance to prove myself.

MF: If you go to the World Cup, unless there's an injury, you'll be on the bench throughout the whole thing. The MetroStars will have a couple of games which you'll have to miss.
TH: World Cup or MLS regular season? It's a no-brainer.

MF: Two years ago, in the Olympics, it was a similar situation, and Paul Grafer had to come through.
TH: Grafer played well. But this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the Olympics and now the World Cup. I think it was a no-brainer, to play for your country, and obviously it's very important. The team colors are very important to me as well, but these things come once in a lifetime, so you need to take advantage of them.

MF: During the Olympics, they called in Brad Friedel and you didn't even get a single minute of playing time. Any animosity towards Clive Charles?
TH: No, Clive is one of the greatest coaches I've ever played in my life, he's an amazing, amazing coach. I would love to play for him again if I get the opportunity.

MF: Diallo is coming this week. Any feelings on that?
TH: He's a great player, he's in one of the best this league.

MF: There's more to him then just "a great player". Your predecessor might have something to say about that.
TH: It's in the past. We learned from that, we acted very immature in that situation, and I don't think it will happen again.

MF: Are you aware of the Timmy chant ala South Park? And "the T - the I - the M" one? What do you think of the ESC standing behind you, giving you support throughout the game?
TH: (laughs) The fans have been so great to me. They are wonderful, I love coming out and saying hello. That's a great chant, it's one of my favorites. It gets me going, it's really cool.
