Perez, Griffiths, Wolyniec, Goldthwaite, De Rosario, Tchani

What do Orlando Perez, Winston Griffiths, John Wolyniec, Kevin Goldthwaite, Dwayne De Rosario, and Tony Tchani have in common? Other than playing for Metro at one time during their career, of course.

The six players above have all been traded twice during a single season. And, when Tchani suits up for Columbus, he will join the other five as the only players in MLS history to play for three clubs in one season. And, amazingly, all six of the above occasions have involved Metro.

Perez game to the MetroStars in the 2000 SuperDraft and became the starter in 2001 at left back. He didn't see much playing time in 2002, appearing in only two games. In May, he and Petter Villegas were sent to DC in exchange for Mark Lisi and Craig Ziadie. Perez would appear in eight games for the Scum, and then was traded to Chicago in July. He would become a starter for the Fire, and stay with the team for two more seasons before an expansion draft move to Chivas USA.

Griffiths only played one season in MLS, 2002, but was it turbulent. He was actually on the roster of four teams during the year, as Dallas won him in a player lottery. But he never suited up for the Burn, his rights almost immediately traded to the MetroStars for D.J. Countess. In April, after only three sub appearances, Griffiths was sent packing to LA for a conditional draft pick. He would play six games for the Galaxy, but was waived and picked up by New England. The Jamaican would eventually play for the Revs against LA in MLS Cup, lose, and never appear in the league gain.

Metro traded away Wolyniec in 2005 to Columbus for Ante Razov, but he made his third return to the club a year later. In 2006, he only played one game for the Crew before being sent to LA in May in a four-player deal (Kyle Martino joined Woly in LA, Joseph Ngwenya and Ned Grabavoy went to Columbus). After ten games on the west coast, the Staten Island Ronaldo returned, Metro sending two draft picks to the Galaxy. Wolyniec stayed with the team until his retirement in 2010.

Goldthwaite started 2007 in Houston, playing only three minutes. In April, he was sent to Toronto for Richard Mulrooney. Then, in June, after nine games for the Canadians, Metro came calling, sending Todd Dunivant up north in a trade which will never make any "Best in Metro history" lists. Goldthwaite played two more seasons for Metro, and is now with Portland.

Finally, we have this year, and the massive trade in April that sent Tchani (and Danleigh Borman) to Toronto for De Rosario. First, De Rosario: he wore out his welcome in Canada after only two games in 2011, played 13 games for Metro, and was sent to the Scum in June for Dax McCarty. Tchani appeared twice for Metro, 13 times for Toronto, and was sent to Columbus for Andy Iro and Lenadre Griffit in July.

So what does the above all mean? Nothing but confirming the instability this club has suffered through the years...
