Behind a two goal effort from guest player Jhonny Arteaga, the New York Red Bull Reserves overcame heavy rainfall and a 1-0 halftime deficit to top the Philadelphia Union Reserves, 2-1, Monday afternoon at Montclair University.
The match took on an up tempo pace right from the opening whistle, with the Red Bulls nearly scoring in the ninth minute off of a John Rooney corner kick. Carlos Mendes took the cross and headed it towards Corey Hertzog, who then smashed a header on target. But Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath made a diving save to deflect the New York attempt.
Nine minutes later, Philadelphia opened the scoring when Roger Torres corralled a misplaced pass from the Red Bulls defense at the top of the box. Torres chipped the ball just over the grasp of New York goalkeeper Alex Horwath to give the Union a 1-0 advantage.
Arteaga, who came on at halftime, made an immediate impact on the match. He evened the score in the 48th minute when Rooney found him in the center of the box, allowing the forward to knock the ball past MacMath.
Just six minutes later, an aggressive play from Red Bulls striker Juan Agudelo resulted in Arteaga's second goal. Agudelo made a sliding attempt on a 50-50 ball at the top of the box, drawing the Union defense while deflecting it towards Arteaga. Arteaga had space to shoot and calmly put New York ahead, 2-1.
