Metro fails, draws Vancouver 1:1
September 10, 2011
If one chooses, one can look for positives in tonight's result. After all, Metro, down to ten men for the entire second half, fought back to steal a point, tying Vancouver 1:1 on a terrific goal by Juan Agudelo. But... well...
No. No more. We're not gonna go down that route again. We've seen these comeback draws all too many times, and tried to draw positives, but at this point of the season, one point is just not enough.
On paper, this was a layup. A rested team, a home game against supposedly the worst team in the league, an expansion team that has never won on the road. This was the game that was going to start Metro's late-season push. And then...
And then, everything repeats itself. Defensive breakdowns. Ball-watching. No offensive cohesion. A stupid goal allowed. Frustration sets in, and what should have been a second yellow on Rafa Marquez gets made up by a terrible red on Jan Gunnar Solli. And rock bottom, something we saw this franchise hit oh so many times before, looks oh so near...
So yes, they came back. Yes, Marquez decided to make a productive play, setting up Agudelo's equalizer. Yes, the team looked dangerous late in the game. Yes, Luke Rodgers made his long-awaited return and looked dangerous.
But no. No more.
Tonight, Metro tied, and tonight, Metro failed.
Lineup: Coundoul, Albright, Ream, Mendes, Solli, Marquez, McCarty, Lindpere, Auvray, Richards, Henry. Subs: Agudelo, Rodgers.
