October 6, 2011 (Official Game Summary)
The New York Red Bulls and D.C. United Reserve Teams drew 1-1 on Thursday afternoon at Montclair State University Soccer Park at Pittser Field. Cristhyan Najar scored for the visitors in the 55th minute before New York's Corey Hertzog tied the game 30 minutes later.
Both teams had chances to find the back of the net in a scoreless first half. In the 12th minute, Red Bulls forward Jose Angulo slid the ball to an open Brian Nielsen, who pulled his shot just past the right post. Later on in the interval, New York midfielder Dax McCarty chipped it over the top to Hertzog. The Red Bulls forward rounded goalkeeper Joe Willis but could not get his attempt on target.
D.C. United took the lead in the 55th minute. A long pass was played from United's defensive end into the New York's half. Substitute Red Bulls goalkeeper Chris Konopka came off his line for the ball and collided with Red Bull John Rooney and a United player. The ball ricocheted into the left of the box and Najar was to first it, knocking it into the vacant goal.
The Red Bulls looked to get back into it three minutes later, as Angulo had enough space to force Willis to parry his shot away. Soon after, Konopka was called upon to save a Brandon Barklage right-footed attempt.
New York earned its equalizer five minutes from full time. Rooney passed it to Semso Nikocevic on the right wing. Nikocevic's ensuing low cross fell to Hertzog, who took a touch before volleying it into the back of the net.
