Swedish defender Markus Holgersson rumored
January 3, 2012
We have our Estonian (Joel Lindpere). We have our Norwegian (Jan Gunnar Solli). We have our Finn (Teemu Tainio). We have our Dane (Brian Nielsen... Ugh. Yes, we have our Dane). What we don't have is our Swede, which seems weird, considering the nationality of RBNY's head coach.
Well, that might change soon. According to Expressen, central defender Markus Holgersson is Metro-bound. The Swedish website reports that "now it is clear that his next club address is New York Red Bulls." According to it, Holgersson has accepted RBNY's offer and is waiting for his visa "and other details" to be arranged.
And now, Backe himself confirmed the signing. "It's a good acquisition for us," he told Expressen. "I've had good scores on Mark and we need a strong physical back to our team. I talked to our general manager a while ago and he said then that Mark had accepted. It remains a visa and little else."
The 6'3" Holgersson recently spent two seasons at Helsingborg, helping them to the league title in 2011, and previously played for Angelholm. He has received his first call-up for the Swedish national team for a January friendly against Qatar.
