Media Day with Jan Gunnar Solli
March 22, 2012
MetroFanatic: Jan, you were usually a midfielder, and now you're forced to play right back.
Jan Gunnar Solli: Yes, I think it's a position that suits me well, the way we play on the Red Bulls. I think it's gonna be my position also this year.
MF: The team has been looking for a central midfielder, and you played that position earlier in your career, right?
JGS: Yeah, I also played holding midfielder, but also running midfielder, I like to go forward, so... whatever, it's not my call to make myself a midfield player again. It's up to the coach, and also we need fullbacks who that want to go forward as well and sometimes make long runs, and I can do that too. And we have more players in the team, which might challenge for a more competitive group this year.
MF: So it's not frustrating that the team is doing the search and you're not considered?
JGS: It's not frustrating at all. I know that people around the team are always looking for players. They are doing a good job. Who knows, maybe there will come in a midfield player who will be our attacking guy. Now it will be interesting to see, maybe if we start playing really well in our two home games, maybe all the searching is gonna go away.
MF: Let's talk about something more important. You said your mother is afraid of you marrying an American girl. Is that still a fear of hers?
Dax McCarty: (laughs)
MF: Dax, you want to comment on that a little bit?
DM: I'm an American, I take offense to that!
JGS: (laughs) OK, Dax, yeah, the thing with my mother, she is really simple, and sometimes challenging to a language can be a hard time. And if she is gonna cook, what will she cook? (laughs) She doesn't know what they eat...
MF: Speaking of which... Lutefisk. Tell us about lutefisk. They don't eat that in America, that's for sure.
JGS: (laughs) Lutefisk is not something I eat back in Norway either.
MF: Really? I thought we actually have an expert!
JGS: It's like alive. When you touch it, it gives... I don't know how you call it, it's a shaky fish, I don't like when the fish is shaking.
MF: Let's talk about fjords. I've been wanting to go on a tour of fjords for the longest time...
JGS: I totally understand. To experience Norway and Scandinavia, you will definitely see a lot of mountains and a lot of fjords. The fjords are really beautiful. It's a nice ride all the way from the south to the north. It's definitely worth the travel.
